Audits are performed on a website in order to determine how much & what kind of SEO and design work must be performed on a website. In this case, we looked at a local sign manufacturer, Midwest Sign Center, and compared it to a local competitor, Custom Sign Center.
Aesthetics and Responsiveness
First off, we took a look at the aesthetics of the website — was it visually pleasing? Midwest Sign Center’s website was definitely fairly outdated and could use some work on the design side. It was a bit cluttered, difficult to read, and not responsive in the slightest. Their logo, however, was very well put together! Custom Sign Center, on the other hand, had a more visually pleasing website with easy to read text and a more clean-looking homepage, all while being mobile responsive.
Search Engine Optimization Audit
Next, we examined things like the number of h1 tags on each website’s page or the amount of photos with alt tags. We found that Midwest Sign Center had no h1 tags or alt tags, whereas Custom Sign Center had both. These tags are important because, when choosing what order to show websites in, Google looks to h1 and alt tags to help it determine what the website is about and where to rank it in a search result for keywords that appear in those alt tags and h1 tags. Having more descriptive h1 tags and alt tags helps Google understand what the website is about and helps rank it higher.
Finally, we looked at how many pages Google’s bots indexed on each website. Midwest Sign Center had 10 pages, which is pretty low. However, when compared to a competitor, we see a large difference; Custom Sign Center had about 1260 pages! That’s no a mistype, they had 1250 more pages than Midwest Sign Center. This means that Custom Sign Center has a much greater chance of ranking high in results for searches such as “custom signs in ohio”.
